Donald Trump proclaims Democrats are “treasonous” if they don’t applaud him enough
After delivering his first State of the Union address, Trump complained that he didn’t receive enough applause from Democratic members of Congress in attendance. And, according to our president, if they don’t enthusiastically cheer him, they must be criminals.
As he put it, OTDI 2018: “[The Democrats] were like death and un-American. Un-American," Trump complained. “Somebody said treasonous. Yeah, I guess, why not? Can we call that treason? Why not? I mean, they certainly didn’t seem to love our country very much.”
A reality check: As NPR dryly noted, “During President Barack Obama's speeches, Republicans rarely cheered.”
(By the way, it seems unnecessary to even mention it, but this is the same Donald Trump who heaped praise on deadly or insurrectionist riots in Charlottesville, Washington, Lansing, and elsewhere.)
