Act I: Allure of the Forbidden: Before Trump took office, Obama warned him that North Korea's nuclear weapons program, headed up by Glorious Leader Kim Jong Un, was the "most dangerous problem" facing the United States.
Act II: The Flirtation—like third graders: In 2017, Trump attracted Kim’s attention by saying he could meet him “with fire and fury like the world has never seen.” In his first speech to the UN, he threatened to “totally destroy North Korea.”
Later in 2017, Kim called Trump an “old lunatic,” to which the president responded: “Why would Kim Jong Un insult me by calling me 'old,' when I would NEVER call him 'short and fat?' Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend—and maybe someday that will happen!”
Act III: The Meet Cute: Love officially bloomed in 2018 when the two leaders swooned over each other in Singapore. “I have solved that problem,” claimed Trump, about North Korea, noting that he got “everything” in a deal he made with Kim.
Act IV: The Long-Distance Pining: Trump told a rally that he “was really tough” on Kim but “then we fell in love, okay? No, really—he wrote me beautiful letters, and they’re great letters.”
Act V: The REALLY Bad Break-Up: OTDI 2019, Kim signaled an end to his romance with Donald by firing two brand-new ballistic missiles. And to ensure the world knew they were never ever ever getting back together, he launched at least nine that month.
The Epilogue: Trump’s national security advisor John Bolton told ABC News in 2020: "I think Kim Jong Un gets a huge laugh out of this. [His love] letters … are written by some functionary in the North Korean Workers Party agitprop office.”
