On This Day In 2017
Trump's Muslim Travel Ban is declared unconstitutional
Candidate Trump had scored points with voters by promising a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."
So once he assumed the levers of power, his first Executive Order prohibited people from seven Muslim-majority countries, as well as Syrian war refugees, from entering our country. His Order was widely condemned, even by fellow Republicans, and led to chaos at the airports and borders.
However, President Trump wasn't particularly concerned with whether his actions were legal or not. So it wasn't surprising OTDI 2017 when a federal judge ruled Trump’s Executive Order was unconstitutional and issued an immediate STOP on Trump’s action nationwide.
The Trump Administration later rejiggered their Order twice, so that the Supreme Court (now with more Trump appointees) could eventually rule that Trump's final version was legal.
Biden’s response
On his first day in office, Joe Biden rescinded Donald Trump’s Muslim Travel Ban via Presidential Proclamation. As he noted, the Ban had “contraven(ed) our values” and “undermined national security.”
Note: Today is the first Democratic primary. If you're in South Carolina,
don't forget to vote; it's good practice for November!
