Trump lies about the impact of his healthcare policies

High prescription drug prices are a key concern for many Americans. So Trump, to score points for his 2020 reelection campaign, pretended that his policies had resulted in lower prices.

OTDI 2020, in his State of the Union address, he bragged: “Last year, for the first time in 51 years, the cost of prescription drugs actually went down.”

The reality: But as PolitiFact notes, “when we spoke to experts, they quickly debunked this position.…” In fact, prices actually increased quite a bit under Trump. In 2019, prices rose on 4,311 different drugs, with an average increase of about 21%. Only 619 meds showed price declines, according to data they reported from Rx Savings Solutions.

The lesson in all this? When Trump says things, the initial inclination is to believe him. After all, he was the president! It’s important to remember, though, that sometimes he invents stuff out of thin air, just to make himself look good.
