Trump to World: You can't trust the USA
Three days after taking office, OTDI 2017, Trump took America out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the 12-nation agreement to work together on trade issues.
TPP was intended to help the alliance remain competitive with China on several fronts. Most economists agreed the pact would have boosted the American economy. Secretary of Defense Carter even noted that TPP would have been as valuable for the country as another aircraft carrier.
But that’s not the point of this OTDI. The point we’re making today is that we disagree with exiting TPP if for no other reason than the message it sends to the world:
“The U.S. is a mess. Every time we change presidents, that gives us license to pull a 180 on everything we had agreed to with you beforehand. You can completely trust what we as a nation say and do…but only until our next election, and then you have to forget about those treaties you negotiated with us.”
Sadly, Trump didn’t listen to us. TPP was just one of a dozen key international agreements he weaseled our country out of.
