On This Day In 2019
In the fall of 2018, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. It was mystifying why Abe would do such a thing because Trump had done very little to – you know – promote peace.
Months later, the influential Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun finally revealed why Abe had placed Trump’s name in nomination: Trump asked him to do it.
So, it turns out that this was another situation in which this U.S. president implored world leaders to do something ridiculous just to make him personally look good.
Trump’s desire to seek personal favors eventually escalated to the point where he begged Zelensky to lie about Biden. So Trump’s unmatched narcissism didn’t get him a Nobel…but it did get him an impeachment.

OTDI 2019, Asahi Shimbun editorialized about how silly Abe’s actions made Japan look.
